HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR ARIZONA PLANTS AND TREES

Plant App

Plant App 2
Whether you are new to Arizona or lived here your entire life, chances are there are at least a few plants and trees growing in your yard that you cannot identify by name. Or better yet, maybe you visited another home or property and fell and in love with a specific type of tree or plant but didn’t have anybody to ask what they are.

Many of our clients have either moved to Arizona and/or maintain a second home here and some of the questions we often here from them are “what kind of plant is that?” and “what do we need to do to take care of it?” So, unless you are an experienced southwest horticulturalist, this article is to help you accomplish the following:

  • Identify the various trees and plants (and even weeds and bugs) growing on your Arizona property
  • Learn how to help manage and take care of them
  • Better identify other plants and trees growing in other places that you might want to include in your own landscaping

Most people today have smartphones and as we all know, there are apps for nearly everything we do these days…including horticulture. Arizona has 5 climate zones that all support thousands of different types of plants, trees, and weeds. Within these zones, it can be hard to keep track of even the most common plants and trees but with modern technology, you don’t have to memorize these anymore.

There are a number of great “plant identification apps” you can now download to your smartphone to help identify, keep track of, and better learn how to maintain the plants, trees, and weeds on your Arizona property. Some of these apps charge a small fee to use while others are free. The most popular of these apps currently include: PlantNet (free), PlantSnap (free), PictureThis (Paid), LeafSnap, etc. Personally, I use PictureThis and even though I have to pay them $30 a year for their “gold” service level, I find the price worth it and here are some of the main reason why:

I can take pictures of everything growing on my property and it will tell me what it is, how to maintain it, what it needs, and what I need to do with it (if anything). If you have a pet, it can also help tell you if you have any plants that are potentially harmful / toxic to your pets.

It allows me to create my own “My Garden” where I can keep track of all of the plants and trees on my property in one place. No more having to remember what kind of plants and trees you have on your property and makes those trips to the hardware store and conversations with landscaping crews much easier.

It allows me to “diagnose” a potential problem with my plants and trees by taking a picture of the problem spots and providing me with an explanation and solution to the problem.

It can help me identify any insects or birds (if you can get close enough to get a picture of them) as well as any weeds that might pop-up on your property and how to manage them.

If I see different plants and trees on properties I am visiting and/or a nursery I can quickly take pictures of what I like and research them later on my app. This is a great way to “remember” what you saw and use that information to help improve your own property.

I’m sure there are a lot more benefits I may have missed here but these are the ones I use the most and would benefit our clients the most as well. One of the main differences between all these app options tends to be the ability the identify your plants and trees from your pictures…some are better at this than others. In my experience, PictureThis does the best job of this. If you have another app you would suggest or a different experience, please share them in the comments below!
